Government Services for Immigrants: Bureau of Immigrant Worker’s Rights, NY State Department of Labor
February 9, 2010
The Bureau of Immigrant Workers Rights at the New York State Department of Labor‘s main task is connecting immigrants and foreign language speakers to all the services the Department of Labor has to offer. The BIWR has community liaisons that reach out to immigrant communities to spread information about labor rights. As most of us know, immigrants are very vulnerable to labor exploitations and abuses.
Some of the important divisions at the Dept. of Labor for immigrants are:
- Division of Labor Standards which will investigate and follow up on complaints about overtime, the minimum wage and child labor. The DOL BIWR rep. emphasized that even undocumented workers can collect back wages.
- Services for job seekers including One Stop Career Centers, career counseling, job fairs, resume review, online job bank and some One Stop Career Centers offer training and ESL classes.
- BIWR will provide workshops and talks to underserved immigrant populations about labor rights and DOL services
- Information about unemployment insurance benefits and changes
