Government Services for Immigrants: “We Are NY” TV program
We Are NY is a very cool television program on NY public access TV and available on YouTube. The episodes are designed to not only help people learn English but also to learn about living in NYC. All of the actors are actually immigrants and many speak with accents or speak less than perfect English.
We are NY is a program of the Mayor’s Office of Adult Education and partners include the Queens Library. Each branch of the Queens Library should have at least one set of the We Are NY episodes and accompanying learning materials like a graphic novel-like book of each episode, vocabulary reviews, character action reviews and bilingual glossaries.
Topics include financial literacy, asthma, weddings & marriage, information for parents on being active in their children’s schools, domestic violence prevention & support for victims, diabetes, staying in school, navigating the healthcare systems and hospitals and quitting smoking
